Le test de Losail marquait le retour en piste des pilotes MotoGP en 2021, plus de trois mois après leur dernier roulage sur les prototypes. Dernier roulage mais aussi dernier départ, puisqu’ils n’avaient plus effectué la manoeuvre depuis celui du Grand Prix du Portugal, le 22 novembre 2020.
Le départ, les pilotes ont aussi besoin de le pratiquer pour retrouver les réflexes et les habitudes qu’ils ont au moment de lancer leur machine. D’où les exercices qu’ils font une fois le temps du test écoulé : ils viennent se placer sur la ligne droite et effectuent des essais de départ, dans une zone prédéfinie pour cela.
